The Importance of Church

How important is worship to your spiritual life? How important is fellowship to your spiritual growth? The writer to the Hebrews says: And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near (Heb. 10:24-25).

Some of us are absolutely persuaded that we need to worship God weekly and need the fellowship of other Christians in order to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. You can tell by the way these Christians set their priorities. Others are not yet persuaded that this worship and fellowship is essential to their spiritual well-being.

I have read some biographies of people who have become stronger spiritually while living in solitary confinement in prison. Others because of old age or infirmity become shut-in. But in both cases, these folks were not casually or intentionally neglecting to meet with other Christians. They did not choose their circumstances. However, some who call themselves Christians here in America are choosing not to meet with other Christians regularly, and they are doing this to their spiritual peril.

We just completed another Christianity Explored series, at the end of which we have participants complete a written evaluation. Those who stick it out for all 8 weeks or come most weeks invariably say that they enjoyed it and had a positive experience, even those who are not yet persuaded of the truth of Christianity. Why is that? They found the fellowship encouraging. They enjoyed the human interaction, but we need encouragement to love another and to love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength.

We have the capacity to provide this kind of spiritual encouragement to one another, but it happens best when we are face to face, when we are meeting together- especially when we are meeting together in prayer or around the Scriptures, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that worship and fellowship are not indispensable to your personal well-being. There is no true human flourishing apart from proper relationship with God and other Christians. Meeting together in worship and fellowship are essential components of the Christian life.
